Increased troponin levels can detect transient global amnesia mimics

چکیده
Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a well-defined syndrome with temporarily impaired memory formation lasting several hours. Retrospective case series diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) demonstrated that on average 5.4% of putative TGA cases are actually mimicked by strokes. To avoid delay in stroke diagnosis – because DWI usually deferred day or two results from one large retrospective indicate acutely elevated cardiac troponin levels will preselect those at highest risk as mimic and so need urgent also cardiological work-up. Prospective studies have to ascertain whether measuring suspected be helpful improve outcome.

We describe the case of a 79-year-old patient referred for suspected transient global amnesia, after an episode of anterograde amnesia which lasted 90 min. An EEG, performed after the episode, showed bilateral temporal electrographic seizures, orienting the diagnosis toward a transient epileptic amnesia. Transient epileptic amnesia is defined by temporal lobe epilepsy characterized by recurrent...

Sir, We read with great interest the letter of McCorry and Crowley concerning an attack of transient global amnesia (TGA) considered secondary to herpes simplex viral encephalitis. Some features of the reported attack are unusual. The patient was a relatively young person: 39 years compared with an average age of 61 with TGA. At the beginning the patient suddenly became ‘distressed’; he realize...

متن کاملTransient global amnesia.
Transient global amnesia is an alarming but benign disorder of middle age, which prevents both the formation of new memories, and the retrieval of recently formed ones, for some hours. Research over the last 10 years has shed light on the epidemiology, neuropsychology, functional anatomy and differential diagnosis of this distinctive condition, and clarified its management.
